Beyond brackish water, Florida faces several distinctive water quality challenges due to its climate, geology, and human activities:
  1. High TDS and Salt Intrusion: Florida's proximity to the ocean, along with aquifers located near coastal areas, contributes to high levels of total dissolved solids (TDS) and salt intrusion in water supplies. This is especially common in the southern regions and areas affected by drought or over-extraction.
  2. Hard Water: Florida’s groundwater often contains high levels of calcium and magnesium, leading to hard water. This can cause scaling on appliances, plumbing, and irrigation equipment, making water softening a key treatment need.
  3. Iron and Sulfate: In some Florida regions, groundwater contains elevated levels of iron and sulfate. These minerals can stain fixtures, affect water taste, and contribute to sulfur odors (rotten egg smell) that are particularly noticeable in well water.
  4. Nitrate and Phosphate Runoff: Due to agriculture and lawn fertilization, nitrate and phosphate contamination are common, especially in central Florida and agricultural zones. This runoff can leach into aquifers and surface waters, posing health risks and affecting water quality.
  5. Organic Contaminants: Florida’s warmer climate can promote organic growth, leading to issues like algae blooms in surface waters and organic contaminants in groundwater. This requires additional filtration, especially for municipalities and homes near bodies of water.
  6. Bacteria and Viruses: Given Florida’s warm and humid conditions, there is a higher risk of bacterial and viral contamination in untreated water sources, particularly in wells. This makes UV disinfection and other microbial treatments popular among well water users.
  7. Radon and Hydrogen Sulfide: Florida's geological formations sometimes lead to radon in groundwater, as well as hydrogen sulfide, which can cause odors and water quality concerns, particularly in private wells.
Tannins are another common issue in Florida's water, especially in areas with significant organic material in the soil and abundant wetlands. Here’s how they impact water quality:
  1. Color and Aesthetics: Tannins are naturally occurring organic compounds that often leach into groundwater from decaying vegetation. They can give water a yellow to brown tint, affecting its appearance and sometimes making it look like “tea-colored” water.
  2. Taste and Odor: While tannins are not typically harmful, they can impart an earthy or musty taste and odor to the water, which can be unpleasant for drinking and cooking.
  3. Clogging and Staining: In some cases, tannins can contribute to staining of plumbing fixtures, laundry, and even surfaces in contact with water. They can also cause clogging in finer filters, increasing maintenance needs.
  4. Prevalence in Shallow Wells and Surface Water: Tannins are particularly common in Florida's shallow wells and surface water sources, as these are more likely to come into contact with decaying vegetation in wetlands and marshy areas.
For these reasons, tannin removal is often needed for homeowners and businesses in Florida. Specialized tannin filters, often using anion exchange or activated carbon, are effective solutions to improve water clarity, taste, and odor, making them essential for well water and surface water treatment in the region.
