Barium
What is Barium?
Barium is a lustrous, machinable metal found in nature. Barium enters drinking water sources through discharge of drilling wastes or metal refineries, and erosion of natural deposits.
What are the Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCL) for Barium?
The United States Environmental Protection Agency sets a Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) for contaminants in public drinking water. The MCL is the maximum concentration that is allowed for public water supplies. The United States Environmental Protection Agency states the maximum contaminant level for Barium allowed in drinking water is 2 mg/L or 2 ppm.
What are the potential health effects from long-term exposure above the MCL?
After long-term exposure to high levels of Barium, some experienced an increase in their blood pressure.
What treatment methods have been proven to be effective for removal or inactivation?
Ion exchange or reverse osmosis has been most effective for the removal of Barium to below 2 mg/L or 2 ppm.
