Sierra-FX Whole House Filtration & Scale Prevention System Questions & Answers
What is Hard Water?
The term hardness refers to the quantity of dissolved calcium and magnesium in water. These minerals, which come primarily from limestone type rock formations, are found to some degree in almost all natural waters. Calcium and magnesium cause problems for two principal reasons:
When the water is warmed, they precipitate out of solution and form a hard, rock-like scale. This scale accelerates corrosion, restricts flow, and reduces heat transfer in water heaters and boilers.
When they combine with soap, they react to form a curd, which interferes with cleaning, dries out skin, and leaves deposits on plumbing and clothes (bathtub ring; ring around the collar). The minerals in hard water gradually settle out forming a hard scale. Scale centimeters thick can build up over time in hard water areas. Scale build up will eventually clog pipe, and can decrease the life of toilet flushing units by 70 percent and water faucets by 40 percent according to a report published by the American Water Works Association (AWWA). Hardness scale can also shorten life of washing equipment, dishwashers, and clothes washers by as much as 30 percent according to the AWWA report.
Hardness is measured in parts per million (or the equivalent mg/L) or in grains per gallon (gpg). Note: if the water analysis is given in ppm as CaCO3 then 1 gpg = 17.1 ppm. There is no established limit for the acceptable level of hardness in water, but it is generally considered to become problematic at around 3 gpg.
Levels of hardness are referred to as follows:
Soft Water: 0 - 1 grains per gallon (gpg)
Slightly Hard Water: 1 - 4 grains per gallon (gpg)
Moderately Hard Water: 4 - 7 grains per gallon (gpg)
Hard Water: 7 - 10 grains per gallon (gpg)
Very Hard Water: Over 10 grains per gallon (gpg)

What is the Sierra-FX used for?
The Sierra-FX system is used to filter public city water sources where superior water is desired for both taste and functional use. These systems are capable of providing filtered, conditioned water to whole house, commercial, irrigation, and agricultural applications. The Sierra-FX is specially customized to include water conditioning for the prevention of hard water scale.
So how does the Sierra-FX work?
Water flows into the valve at the top, down through the media and then up through the ‘riser’ tube in the middle of the vessel. As the water travels through the media the contaminants are filtered leaving crystal clear, better tasting water. The Sierra-FX also includes an internal module to reduce the effects of hard water scale. There are timer options that can be set to automatically self clean (backwash) and wash away any of the accumulated contaminants. Cleaning can be set for a given time convenient to your lifestyle. It's as simple as that!
What exactly does the Sierra-FX filter or remove?
The Sierra-FX is designed to filter out common municipal disinfectants such as chlorine & chloramine, chlorination by-products, VOCs, and also filters pesticides, insecticides, and herbicides, making these systems perfect for water treatment in rural areas surrounded by farmland. Sediment, debris, and particulates will also be filtered by these systems, eliminating separate sediment filter cartridge systems.
Will the Sierra-FX Series soften water?
No, the Sierra-FX Series is designed as a water conditioner. To "soften water" you actually have to remove the calcium and magnesium hard water minerals. The Sierra-FX Series does not remove the calcium or magnesium, so you will not have soft water or that "slimy" water that is associated with soft water. These systems are alternatives to salt based water softeners and perfect for customers who live in banned water softener areas or just want to Go Green! The built-in no salt magnetic module is designed to reduce the effects of hard water without chemicals.
Is there any routine maintenance involved with the Sierra-FX?
No, the Sierra-FX is considered a maintenance free whole house water filter. That is, there are no routine filters to replace and no chemicals or salts to add. The Sierra-FX will filter and clarify your water by filtering chemical tastes & odors and suspended solids in the water. It will also improve the taste & odor of your water. The filtration media will need to be exchanged approximately every 5 to 8 years*. This is easily accomplished with the use of a wet & dry vacuum which you use to vacuum out the old filtration media from the top of the filter. You then replace it with a new bed of filtration media which will last approximately another 5 to 8 years*. This is the only maintenance that the system will require. *Some applications may require a more frequent replacement interval.
If the Sierra-FX does not use chemicals or sodium, what does it use?
Just water is needed for backwashing! The Sierra-FX System will absorb chemical tastes and odors from your water and trap it within the filter. Approximately once a week, the automatic control valve will initiate a backwash cycle for approximately 20 minutes and rinse the media of any trapped particulates. The system will then automatically re-set itself to backwash again next week. In most cases, the backwash water can be reused for areas like irrigation since there is no added salt in the water.
Can the Sierra-FX be used to treat well water sources?
No, the Sierra-FX is designed to treat hard water, chlorine bad tastes, and odors typically associated with city municipal water sources. If you're using well water and looking for a salt-free alternative to well water softeners, take a look at our Iron Max-FX Well Water Conditioner!
