Hard water contains high levels of calcium and magnesium, which come from natural rock formations. These minerals can cause several problems:
- Scale Build-up: When heated, calcium and magnesium precipitate out, forming scale that can clog pipes, reduce the efficiency of water heaters and boilers, and accelerate corrosion.
- Soap Interference: Hard water reacts with soap to form a curd, which makes cleaning less effective and can leave deposits on plumbing, clothes, and skin.

Sierra-FX System Overview
Purpose: The Sierra-FX is designed to filter municipal chlorinated water sources, improving taste and functionality while providing scale prevention for whole-house, commercial, and agricultural uses.
How It Works:
- Water Flow: Water enters the top of the filter, flows through the media, and exits through a central riser tube.
- Filtration: The Sierra-FX system filters out contaminants such as chlorine, chloramine, VOCs, pesticides, and herbicides, and removes sediment and debris. The Iron Max-FX system filters out contaminants such as iron, manganese, sulfur odor and removes sediment and debris.
- Scale Prevention: An internal module reduces hard water scale effects without removing calcium and magnesium.
- No Softening: It doesn’t soften water (remove calcium and magnesium), but it prevents scale build-up.
- Maintenance-Free: No routine filter replacements or chemical/salt additions. Media needs replacement approximately every 5 to 10 years.
- Backwashing: The system backwashes automatically about once a week without salt or chemicals to clean the media. This cycle lasts about 20 minutes and can often reuse the backwash water for irrigation.
