Read First: You may not need a seawater desalination system. If your well has salt water intrusion you may just need a brackish water reverse osmosis system which is significantly different from a sea water filter. Please email your water test report to: [email protected] - our engineers will review your water chemistry and offer the best possible recommendation for your water.

Key Differences Between Seawater Desalination and RO Units
- Pressure Requirements: Seawater desalination requires significantly higher pressure compared to standard reverse osmosis (RO) units. Seawater, with around 35,000 mg/l of dissolved solids, needs approximately 350 psi to start producing clean water. In contrast, RO units typically handle water with around 6,000 mg/l of solids and need only about 60 psi for initial treatment.
- Operating Pressures: Due to the high dissolved solids, seawater systems often operate at pressures around 1,000 psi, while RO units generally function at 150 to 250 psi. This high pressure necessitates more robust equipment and larger pumps.
- Material Considerations: Seawater is highly corrosive, requiring desalination systems to be constructed from non-corrosive materials to ensure durability and longevity. This increases both the cost and complexity of seawater units compared to standard RO systems.

Essential Requirements:
- Seawater Delivery Pump: Required separately. Must deliver seawater at a minimum rate of 5 gallons per minute (gpm) at 30 pounds per square inch (psi).
- Pre-filtration:
- Seawater is first filtered through an integrated sediment prefilter to remove dirt, sand, and debris, protecting the RO membrane.
- Additional pretreatment may be necessary for high mineral or contaminant levels to prolong system life.
- Desalination:
- Prefiltered water enters the Reverse Osmosis (RO) system, where it undergoes desalination to become purified.
- Post-Treatment:
- Purified water is collected in a separate storage tank.
- A repressurization pump is required to deliver pressurized water to taps.
- System Control:
- A computer controller monitors and regulates the system, checking feed water pressure, storage tank levels, and water conductivity.
- It manages the high pressure pump and control valves based on sensor readings, with options for adjusting set points and flush parameters.
- Automatic Membrane Flush:
- After each shutdown, the system automatically flushes the membranes to protect against mineral buildup.
- Salinity Monitoring:
- Continuous electronic monitoring with digital readout. Measures TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) in parts per million (ppm), suitable for seawater with up to 50,000 ppm TDS.
- Components:
- Corrosion-resistant frame.
- Fiberglass membrane housings.
- 316L Stainless Steel high-pressure pump, tubing, and fittings.
- Design:
- Built to withstand high pressure and salinity environments.
- UV disinfection systems for virus and bacteria removal.
- Hard water and scale prevention systems.
- Additional water storage tanks and repressurization pumps.
