Total Trihalomethanes "TTHMs"
What are Trihalomethanes?
Trihalomethanes are a by-product resulting from naturally-occurring organic and inorganic materials in water sources reacting with chlorine and chloramine, disinfectants commonly used to treat water sources, including surface water sources such as lakes and ponds.
What are the Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCL) for Trihalomethanes?
The United States Environmental Protection Agency sets a Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) for contaminants in public drinking water. The MCL is the maximum concentration that is allowed for public water supplies. The MCL for Total Trihalomethanes is 0.080 mg/L or 80 ppb.
What are the potential health effects from long-term exposure above the MCL?
Long-term exposure to Trihalomethanes in excess could cause liver, kidney, or central nervous system problems and an increased risk of cancer.
What treatment methods have been proven to be effective for removal or inactivation?
Activated carbon filters have been proven most effective at removing Total Trihalomethanes.
