The EPA establishes Secondary Maximum Contaminant Levels only as a guideline to help consumers manage undesirable contaminants causing bad taste, odor, or color. The SMCL for Iron in drinking water is 0.3 mg/L or 0.3 ppm.

Iron is a considered a secondary contaminant (not health threatening) by the United States Environmental Protection Agency that may result in aesthetic or cosmetic problems, such as rusty color, sediment deposits, metallic taste, or reddish or orange staining. Additionally, high levels of iron may cause corrosion of pipes and appliances.
What treatment methods have been proven to be effective for removal or reduction of Iron?
Oxidizing agents such as chlorine may be required to remove certain types of iron, like colloidal iron and iron bacteria, but other forms of iron may need no chemicals at all. Iron is best treated by customizing specialty well water filters to individually filter each unique water source.

What is Iron?

- Oxidized Red Water Iron, known as ferric iron, is identified by visible red particles found in the water as it is drawn from the faucet.
- Clear Water Iron, known as ferrous iron, is very common and begins dissolved in the water. After water drawn from the faucet is exposed to the air for a period of time, red particles will develop, converting ferrous iron to ferric iron.
- Colloidal Iron consists of extremely small particles of oxidized iron particles suspended in water. This type of iron looks more like cloudy, colored water, instead of being able to actually see small red particles of iron.
- Iron Bacteria, known as organic iron, consists of living organisms found in the water and piping of the well and house. You can tell if you have Bacterial Iron by finding a reddish/green slime buildup in your toilet tank. To confirm this, you should take a sample of this slime to your local health department for testing.

The Iron Max is designed to treat high levels Ferrous Iron (clear water iron) and Ferric Iron (red/orange as drawn) as well as filter Manganese (black staining), Hydrogen Sulfide Gas (rotten egg odor), and Suspended Solids (solid particles suspended in water) to provide quality drinking water. With the addition of a chlorine injection system, the Iron Max is capable of treating Iron Bacteria (organic iron) and Sulfur Reducing Bacteria (rotten egg odors), as well as high levels of Ferrous Iron (clear water), Ferric Iron (red/orange as drawn), Manganese (black staining), Hydrogen Sulfide Gas (rotten egg odor), and Suspended Solids (solid particles suspended in water) to provide quality drinking water. Our Iron Max uses NSF Approved Certified 61 filtration media. This system comes with a free post carbon filter to remove any residual chlorine from your water after the Iron Max system.
