So how does the Iron Max work?
The Iron Max uses a revolutionary hybrid media for the filtration of high iron, manganese, hydrogen sulfide gas odors, and the unique media structure allows for suspended solids filtration to be approximately 3-5 microns nominal, while providing low pressure loss, high service flow rates for your home and irrigation water, and extended contaminant capacity.
The Iron Max is installed after your existing pressure tank or well pressure system to provide point of entry filtration at every tap. Water flows into the valve at the top, down through the specialized media and then up through the ‘riser’ tube in the middle of the vessel. As the water travels through the media the contaminants are removed leaving crystal clear water. There are timer options that can be set to automatically self clean (backwash) and wash away any of the accumulated contaminants. Cleaning can be set for a given time convenient to your lifestyle. Our Twin Iron Max series features two tanks for alternating filtration to provide an unlimited supply of filtered water with no backwash downtime. It's as simple as that!

What exactly does the Iron Max filter or remove?
The Iron Max is a highly effective well water filter that simply requires a pH of 6.8 or greater for optimum performance. The Iron Max does NOT use chemicals or media such as catalytic carbon, greensand, birm, or others, which does not compare to the versatile high performance specialty media used in this system.
With a >6.8 pH*, the Iron Max will filter high levels of Rust, *Ferrous (clear water iron) and *Ferric (red Iron) up to 10ppm (mg/L), Manganese up to 5ppm (mg/L), Hydrogen Sulfide Gas Sulfur Odors up to 3ppm (mg/L), Suspended Solids and Sediment down to 3-5 microns, as well as unpleasant bitter metallic tastes and odors associated with the above. Unlike many basic iron filters, this system is often used successfully to remove high levels of iron with no added chemicals *If your pH is lower than 6.8, RainDance offers simple, cost-effective pH correction solutions to make sure our Iron Max operates perfectly for you.
*Ferrous - This type of iron is often called "clear water iron" since it is not visible in poured water. It is found in water which contains no oxygen, such as water from deep wells or groundwater.
*Ferric - Ferric iron is also known as "red water iron". This type of iron is basically ferrous iron which has been exposed to oxygen (oxidized), usually from the air. These oxidized particles are generally visible in poured water.
Note: The Chemical Free Iron Max is designed to filter iron & manganese to below the EPA's listed maximum level and to below staining levels. However, the Iron Max will not treat tannins, iron bacteria, sulfur reducing bacteria, colloidal iron, or organic iron. If these bacteria are present you will need to add an oxidizer or chlorinate your well to prevent any iron bacteria or sulfur reducing bacteria from passing through the Iron Max filter. We can include easy to follow well chlorination instructions and detailed information on iron bacteria if needed.

What installation is involved with the Iron Max?
Installation has never been easier with our pre-loaded Iron Max systems! On select Iron Max systems we pre-assemble and pre-load your tank so as soon as you receive your filter all you have to do is screw on the control valve and plug-n-play. When components are shipped separately the customer has to assemble and fill their tank with heavy bags of media, and if something goes wrong, you have to dump the entire tank and start all over again. We leave the assembly to the experts so our customers can enjoy their new filtered water without the experience of working on a filter assembly line. For our larger commercial Iron Max systems whose parts cannot be shipped pre-assembled, we include detailed loading instructions and can walk you through step-by-step if needed to ensure everything goes smoothly.
Once the control valve is screwed on there are only three easy connections to install on the Iron Max - inlet and outlet ports sized to your plumbing specifications and a drain outlet. The Iron Max can easily be installed by the do-it-yourselfer with basic plumbing experience or leave it up to a local plumber or contractor and save yourself the hassle.

Is there any routine maintenance involved with the Iron Max?
No, the Iron Max is considered a maintenance free whole house water filter. That is, there are no routine filters to replace and no chemicals or salts to add. The Iron Max will filter and clarify your water by filtering iron, manganese, hydrogen sulfide gas, and suspended solids in the water. It will also improve the taste & odor of your water. The filtration media will need to be exchanged approximately every 8 to 10 years*. This is easily accomplished with the use of a wet & dry vacuum which you use to vacuum out the old filtration media from the top of the filter. You then replace it with a new bed of filtration media which will last approximately another 8 to 10 years*. This is the only maintenance that the system will require. *Some applications may require a more frequent replacement interval.

If the Iron Max does not use chemicals or sodium, what does it use?
Just water is needed for backwashing! The Iron Max System will oxidize and absorb iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide gas from your water and trap it within the filter using media that utilizes an oxidation-reduction reaction and filtration process. Approximately every 1-5 days*, the automatic control valve will initiate a backwash cycle for approximately 10-15 minutes and rinse the trapped particles down a drain or elsewhere. The system will then automatically re-set itself to backwash for another 1-5 days*. In most cases, the backwash water can be reused for areas like irrigation since there are no harmful chemicals or salts in the water. *Backwash intervals depend on water chemistry and usage.

How do you reuse the backwash water?
With the Iron Max filtration system, there can be no wasted water in the classic sense. Since this system does not add any chemicals or salts to the water, the backwash water contains the same chemistry as the raw water source, with the exception of constituents like iron and manganese being higher in concentration. With rare exceptions, this water (we prefer the term discharge water vs. waste water) is suitable for irrigation use or it can be discharged into a dry well for eventual percolation into the original aquifer. Knowing this, our customers have free rein to use their creativity and handiness to route this drain water to gardens, lots, trees, or other plants that could use the extra water and wouldn't mind iron or manganese minerals. Many of our Iron Max customers have cleverly installed their systems to ultimately not waste a drop of water.
