Iron Bacteria
Iron Bacteria is generally more common than sulfur bacteria, simply because iron is abundant in ground water.
Iron bacteria are "oxidizing agents." That is, they combine iron or manganese dissolved in ground water with oxygen. A side effect of the process is a foul smelling brown slime which can coat well screens, pipes, and plumbing fixtures. This slime isn't a health hazard, but it can cause unpleasant odors, corrode plumbing equipment, and clog well screens and pipes. If conditions are right, the bacteria can grow at amazing rates and an entire well system may be rendered virtually useless in just a few months.
There are several signs that may indicate an iron bacteria problem. Water may have a yellow, red or orange color. Rusty slime deposits may form in toilet tanks. A strange smell resembling fuel oil, cucumbers, or sewage may be noticeable. Sometimes the odor will only be apparent in the morning or after other extended periods of non-use.

What can the Iron Max Plus Inline Package do?
The Iron Max Plus Inline Package is specially designed to treat well water sources with iron bacteria (organic iron) problems, as well as other common well water problems such as dissolved iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), hydrogen sulfide odors (H2S), sulfur reducing bacteria, and tannins. Ferrous and ferric iron is very common in well water and can easily be removed without the use of oxidizers or chemicals. Organic iron, also known as iron bacteria, and sulfur reducing bacteria are two less common contaminants that cannot be treated with typical filtration and require an oxidizing agent to effectively remove them from your water. Note these bacteria are not health hazards like E. Coli or Total Coliform, which are best treated by ultraviolet light disinfection. These bacteria are minor nuisances that may cause foul odor, staining, and slime build up in plumbing and fixtures.
How does the Iron Max Plus Inline Package work?
The Inline Package works in four stages to offer effective treatment. The first stage is the Non-Electric Chlorine Feed System, which is plumbed right after your well pressure tank. This system feeds a small amount of chlorine into the water stream to oxidize iron and sulfur bacteria. The inline pellet feeder uses your water pressure to dissolve the dry chlorine pellets inside the tank, so there is no wiring or priming needed.
The second stage is the Retention Contact Tank which is plumbed after the chlorine feed system and before the filtration system. This tank provides prolonged contact time for the chlorine to effectively oxidize all contaminants in the water before it hits the filtration system. When iron bacteria is fully oxidized, it can easily be filtered out by the following filtration system.
The third stage is the Iron Max filtration system, which removes the oxidized contaminants from your water. The Iron Max is an automatic backwashing system that thoroughly cleans the filtration media inside the tank and washes the trapped contaminants out the drain line. With this self-cleaning technology and long-lasting filtration media, the Iron Max is considered a maintenance-free system.
The final fourth stage is a post carbon filter to polish off the water and provide odor-free, great tasting water. This simple filter uses a specially designed cartridge which removes chlorination by-products, THMs, lead, and cysts, but can also work with other standard carbon cartridges.
How does chlorine oxidize iron bacteria?
Liquid chlorine, when added to any water source, will work to oxidize and kill everything it can, including iron, manganese, sulfur, tannins, and some bacteria. After oxidizing and killing what it can there will only be a residual amount of chlorine left, telling us that the chlorine has done it's job. Municipal water treatment plants commonly use chlorine as their disinfectant of choice which is why most city-treated water sources can taste or smell like chlorine from the tap. In well water applications, chlorine is our choice of oxidant to effectively treat a large list of contaminants with one convenient system. The key to proper chlorine oxidation is contact time, where the chemical can make contact with the oxidizable matter long enough to react with and neutralize it. Once these contaminants are neutralized, they are easily removed by water filtration equipment.
Is there any routine maintenance involved with the Iron Max Plus Inline Package?
The only maintenance involved with this system is occasionally adding chlorine pellets to the feeder and replacing the carbon cartridge, typically every 9-12 months depending on water usage.
