Updated 2025: The RainDance Nitrate Eater: Nitrate Removal Meets Hard Water Softening

8/7/2025

If you're dealing with high nitrate levels in your well water—and also battling limescale, white spots, or hard water buildup—the RainDance Nitrate Eater was designed for you. This unique, all-in-one system uses a dual-resin filtration process to remove nitrates and soften hard water at the same time, without the need for reverse osmosis or multiple treatment tanks.

Let’s break down how it works, what makes it different, and how easy it is to maintain.
💧 How the RainDance Nitrate Eater Works
🔬 Dual Resin Technology: The Secret Behind the System
The RainDance Nitrate Eater uses two types of specialty resins inside a single tank:
  1. Anion Exchange Resin:
    • Targets nitrate (NO₃⁻) and sulfate (SO₄²⁻) ions.
    • Exchanges these harmful contaminants for chloride ions.
    • Ideal for agricultural regions, rural areas, and private wells where nitrates exceed safe drinking water standards.
  2. Cation Exchange Resin:
    • Removes calcium (Ca²⁺) and magnesium (Mg²⁺)—the main culprits of hard water.
    • Replaces hardness ions with sodium or potassium ions (depending on what type of regenerant you use).
    • Prevents scale buildup, extends the life of appliances, and improves soap efficiency.
These resins work together in a blended resin bed, delivering nitrate filtered, softened water for your entire home or business.
🔁 How Regeneration Works
Like all ion exchange systems, the Nitrate Eater requires periodic regeneration using sodium chloride (salt) or potassium chloride.
  • How Often?
Frequency depends on your incoming nitrate and hardness levels, water usage, and system size. Most homeowners regenerate every 5–14 days.
  • Is It Automatic?
Yes! Our Nitrate Eater includes a high-efficiency metered control valve that tracks water usage and initiates regeneration only when needed—saving water, salt, and money.
🧰 Typical Maintenance: What to Expect
The RainDance Nitrate Eater is designed for low maintenance operation. Here’s what upkeep typically looks like:
  • ✅ Add salt or potassium to the brine tank as needed (monthly to quarterly).
  • ✅ Check brine tank and system periodically to ensure salt isn’t bridging.
  • ✅ Annual water testing to verify system performance - RainDance Water Systems offers lifetime testing .
  • ✅ Optional resin inspection every 5–10 years (resins can last 10+ years under normal conditions).
  • ✅ RainDance Lifetime Support & Water Testing is included with every system purchase.
🏠 Who Uses the Nitrate Eater?
The RainDance Nitrate Eater is used by customers across the U.S. and globally in locations like:
  • 🏡 Residential homes on private wells
  • 🚜 Small farms and ranches
  • 🐄 Livestock and dairy operations
  • 🏢 Commercial offices and businesses needing nitrate removal + soft water
  • 🌎 Homes in nitrate hotspots: Kansas, Arizona, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Washington, Oregon, Nevada, and more
⚠️ Why Nitrate Removal Matters
Nitrates in well water often come from fertilizers, septic systems, or agricultural runoff. High nitrate levels (above 10 mg/L as nitrogen) are considered unsafe—especially for:
  • Infants and pregnant women
  • Long-term exposure in drinking and cooking water
  • Anyone with compromised immune systems
Unlike standard water softeners or carbon filters, the Nitrate Eater is engineered specifically to reduce nitrate contamination—while solving hard water issues at the same time.
🤔 Nitrate Eater FAQs
❓Is this a reverse osmosis system?
No. The Nitrate Eater uses NSF Certified 61 ion exchange resin, not RO membranes. It provides higher flow rates and easier maintenance than a traditional RO system.
❓ Can it handle high flow rates?
Yes. The Nitrate Eater is available in multiple flow rate options, from residential to high-flow commercial applications.
❓ Can I install it myself?
Many of our customers do! Most systems include an optional installation kit, setup guide, and lifetime technical support. We also offer live chat help 7 days a week.
❓ How do I know it’s working?
We include lifetime water testing to ensure your system is performing at its best. You can also use test strips to monitor nitrate levels at home.
